Great Mosque of Paris was founded after the end of the first World War as a token of gratitude to the Muslim community in France there that come against German troops in a battle that took place in the hills north of the city of Verdun-sur-Meuse in the north-eastern France in 1916, future first world war.
Built on the site of the former Mercy Hospital is the funding provided by the French government. Groundbreaking ceremony conducted in 1922. On July 15, 1926, Grande Mosquée de Paris building was symbolically inaugurated by French President Gaston Doumergue at that time.
Ahmad al-Alawi (1869-1934), a bloody Algerian Sufi saint, was appointed as the priest prayed inauguration as the first sign of a new mosque in the city of Paris in the presence of President Doumergue. Imam Mosque of Paris is currently held by Mufti Dalil Boubakeur, who is also the President of the Muslim Council of France.
