Beautiful Mauritius was first explored by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later settled by the Dutch - who named it in honor of Prince Maurits van Nassau - in the 17th century. This country has been ruled by European powers, including the Netherlands, France and Britain. Britain left the country after they achieved independence in 1968, and became a republic in 1992.
